Poland Nov 7th

Torun - Kravow

rain 6 °C

Hi Everyone. In the interests of time and with the rare and poor internet connections along route, we've decided just to publish a few extracts out of a journal that we're keeping along the way and upload some photos if we get the chance.
Hope all well. JD x

Poland Nov 7th
Feeling a little better, we decide to drive straight to Krakow. It’s a long drive and Joakim spends most of the morning behind the wheel whilst I nurse the remains of my symptoms. We stop at a quaint place for lunch and a nice cold Ocokim (no, not a typo of Joakim!) seems to settle my stomach and so I take over behind the wheel for the remaining 4 hours driving. It couldn’t possibly be any wetter and greyer. The roads are typically Eastern European, as are the driving standards of other road users!
Now Poland is a country which has been overrun countless times in history and long subjected to over-bearing foreign rule. Its people have developed a resilience which has allowed them to bounce back from every crushing blow. This makes it a very fitting place for the scene of our next incident and our first (albeit too early) disagreement takes place when we’re merrily driving along and I hear the immortal words, ‘Now don’t take this as criticism, but…..’
What follows is some ‘useful information’ about the importance of not excessively revving the engine when overtaking on an older, delicate machine. I think what Joakim seems to have forgotten is there’s an older, much more delicate (and potentially volatile) machine behind the wheel.
Five minutes passes of picture and no sound, this is then followed by 20 minutes of lots of sound and bad picture! Normal reception soon resumes after a discussion around appreciating the ‘guidance’, but perhaps after 4 hours behind the wheel on Polish roads in appalling weather with the locals breaking the sound barrier in their Fiat 500’s , the timing could have been a little better.
All of the above is rapidly put into perspective by a visit to Oswiecim, better known as Auschwitz to most of us.
